Hey Creator,

If you've been putting off AI video because it felt expensive, complicated, or just not worth the learning curve — Google just removed all three excuses.

On March 31, Google launched Veo 3.1 Lite — the most affordable model in its Veo family, built specifically for creators who need high-quality AI video at volume, without the premium price tag.

It's not a watered-down experiment. It's the same Google DeepMind technology that powers YouTube Shorts' AI creation features, now available at less than half the cost of its predecessor.

Most creators scrolled past this launch. You shouldn't have. Here's why it matters, what it can do for your channel, and exactly how to use it today.

WHAT IS VEO 3.1 LITE?

Veo 3.1 Lite is Google's entry-level AI video generation model — the newest and most affordable tier in the Veo 3.1 family:

  • Veo 3.1 Lite — Budget-optimised, built for volume, fastest iteration

  • Veo 3.1 Fast — Balanced quality and cost, includes native audio

  • Veo 3.1 — Premium cinematic quality, highest fidelity

It supports text-to-video and image-to-video generation, both landscape (16:9) and portrait (9:16) formats, 720p and 1080p resolution, and clip durations of 4, 6, or 8 seconds.

One thing to know upfront: Veo 3.1 Lite does not generate native audio. That's a Veo 3.1 Fast and above feature. For most YouTube B-roll and Shorts workflows this doesn't matter — you're adding your own voiceover and music anyway. But if you need a character speaking on screen with synced audio, you'll want to step up to Fast.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Veo 3.1 Lite is priced at approximately $0.05 per second of video via the Gemini API. In real terms:

  • A 6-second clip = ~$0.30

  • 10 clips = ~$3

  • 50 clips = ~$15

Compare that to stock footage subscriptions running $200–400/month for a decent library. The math is not close.

To try it free: Go to aistudio.google.com, select Veo 3.1 Lite, and generate your first clips at no cost. No credit card required. This is where you should start — test your prompts here before spending anything.

To scale up: Move to the Gemini API or Vertex AI for pay-per-use production at the $0.05/sec rate. This is for when you're generating regularly and want full control over volume.

Note: Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) gives you Veo 3.1 Fast via the Gemini app — the tier above Lite, with native audio. If you're already on that plan, Lite is still accessible separately via the API.

IS IT ALREADY INSIDE YOUR YOUTUBE APP?

Almost — and this context matters.

What's currently inside YouTube Shorts is Veo 3.1 Fast — the tier above Lite — powering the "AI Video" and "Edit with AI" features inside the Shorts editor. Veo 3.1 Lite lives in Google AI Studio and the Gemini API for now.

But here's the bigger picture: Google owns both Veo and YouTube. They're systematically embedding their video AI across every creator surface — the Shorts editor, the YouTube Create app, Google Vids, the Gemini app.

Veo 3.1 Lite is the affordable on-ramp into that entire ecosystem. Creators who learn to work with it now will find the workflow already waiting for them inside YouTube as these integrations expand.

Now — here's how to put it to work.

HOW TO USE IT IN YOUR YOUTUBE WORKFLOW

B-Roll

Your fastest win. Generate supporting footage for any topic without a camera or stock subscription.

Use the formula: Subject + action + setting + lighting + camera movement + mood.

Batch 5–6 clips per video in one session and drop them wherever you'd cut back to your face.

Try this prompt: "Sweeping drone shot of a lone hiker on a fog-covered mountain ridge at dawn, cinematic realism, shallow depth of field, 16:9"

YouTube Shorts

Generate vertical clips natively in 9:16 — no cropping, no reformatting. Bring them into CapCut or the YouTube Shorts editor, layer your voiceover and music on top, and publish. No location. No camera. No crew.

Try this prompt: "Person jumping into a crystal blue ocean from a cliff, dramatic slow motion, golden hour, vertical 9:16, high energy"

Channel Intros and Branded Transitions

Generate 10 intro variations for under $3. Test them, pick the one that fits your channel's feel, and reuse it across every video. Refresh it whenever your brand evolves — without calling a motion designer.

Try this prompt: "Abstract cinematic opener, deep navy and gold tones, slow light flare across frame, minimal and premium feel, 4 seconds, 16:9"

Testing Visual Directions Before You Film

Before you script and shoot an entire video, spend $2 generating 4–5 clip variations in different moods, lighting styles, and settings. You'll know which visual direction works before you invest hours in production.

Try this prompt: "Minimal dark desk setup, single lamp, high contrast, focused and intense mood, slow push in, 16:9"

TIPS TO USE IT SMARTER

  • Always start in Google AI Studio's free tier. Refine your prompts there before moving to paid API generation.

  • Generate in batches. One session keeps your visual style consistent and saves time.

  • 720p is enough for Shorts and most web contexts. Only go 1080p for hero content.

  • Keep prompts visual-only. Lite doesn't generate audio — don't waste prompt space describing sound.

  • Label your AI content. YouTube automatically embeds a SynthID watermark and requires disclosure. Non-disclosure now risks demonetisation.

  • Use Lite for B-roll and testing. Step up to Fast only when you need native audio or higher fidelity final cuts.

THE BOTTOM LINE

A drone shot. A café scene. A moody establishing shot. All available for under $0.30, generated in seconds, no camera or crew required.

The creators who build this workflow now develop the visual library, the prompting instinct, and the production speed that everyone else will spend the next year trying to catch up to.

Start free. Generate ten clips. See what your content looks like with real cinematic B-roll behind it.

Then decide.
