You write a draft in your AI chat window. It's good, but not quite right, so you paste it into Google Docs to edit. Then you want another pass, so you copy it back into the chat, explain what changed, and wait for a new version. Then you paste that back in too.
By the third round, you've lost track of which version is current, and you're re-explaining context you already gave the AI two steps ago.
That loop is exactly what Claude Docs is built to close.
What's actually different
Instead of drafting in a chat and moving the result elsewhere, you ask Claude for a doc directly in your conversation, and it opens as a living document right there. You can edit it yourself, or ask Claude for the next pass, and it keeps building on the same doc instead of starting over each time.
A few things make this more than just "AI writes in a doc now":
Claude asks clarifying questions upfront, before drafting, instead of guessing and hoping you'll fix it later
It leaves comments explaining why it made certain choices, so you're not left wondering
It can pull from your files, past conversations, and connected apps when drafting, so you're not re-explaining background every time
What this looks like in practice
Say you've been chatting with Claude about a client brief, and now you need it as an actual shareable document.
Instead of copying the conversation into a doc app and cleaning it up by hand, you just ask for the doc.
Claude turns what you already discussed into a formatted document, with headings and structure, that you can keep editing right there or share by link.
Where it's still rough
This is in beta, so a few things aren't there yet:
No version history, so you can't roll back to an earlier draft
No comment-only sharing — people you share with can view or edit, nothing in between
Charts inside a doc don't auto-refresh; you have to ask Claude to pull updated data
On mobile, you can view a doc and check on results, but editing, starting from a template, or changing sharing settings needs web or desktop
None of these are dealbreakers, but worth knowing before you build a workflow around it.
Who can use it
It's on by default for Pro, Max, and Team plan users (you can turn it off in Settings if you'd rather not). It's not available on the Free plan yet.
If your workflow involves a lot of drafting and re-drafting with AI, this is worth trying on your next brief, outline, or client doc.
