Hey Creator,

Every image generator promises to "learn your style" eventually.

Midjourney's version of that promise just got a real upgrade — not through a new feature, but through fixing what the personalization system had to work with all along.

Let’s dive in!

Midjourney rolled out V8.2 on July 24, and it's now the default model for anyone using the platform. If you already use Midjourney, this is worth understanding before your next project.

If you don't, here's the context: Midjourney is a paid, subscription-only AI image generator, accessible through its website (no Discord required anymore), starting at a basic monthly plan.

What actually changed:

Midjourney says this update focuses on three things: aesthetics, image quality, and personalization. In practice, that means:

  • Outputs are meant to feel bolder and more considered, with fewer random low-quality generations slipping through

  • Its personalization system — a profile that learns your taste by having you rate past images, then leans future results toward what you liked — now draws from a much larger pool of images

  • The more you've rated your past generations, the more noticeably it should understand your specific taste

Why the personalization change matters more than it sounds:

If you've used Midjourney's personalization profile before, you already know the drill — you rate a batch of images, and it starts nudging your results toward what you liked.

The catch has always been that it only had so many images to learn from. A bigger pool means more nuance in separating your taste from someone else's, especially if your profile already has a lot of ratings behind it.

For creators, this is the part worth paying attention to.

If you've built a visual brand with a consistent look, better personalization means less time nudging every prompt back toward your style and more consistency across a batch of images without repeating your style cues in every single prompt.

A few things worth knowing before you dive in:

  • V8.2 is now the default — you don't need to opt in or add anything extra to your prompt to use it

  • If your personalization profile is from an earlier version, you may need to unlock your Global V7/V8 profile to carry it over into V8.2

  • Midjourney's own claims (bolder outputs, fewer low-quality results) come from their official announcement — there's no independent benchmark yet, so treat the improvement as real but not yet measured by outside testing

Worth trying if:

  • You already use Midjourney regularly and have a personalization profile with some history behind it

  • You've struggled to keep a consistent visual style across a batch of generations

  • You want to test whether the "fewer bad generations" claim holds up in your own workflow, since that's the easiest thing to check yourself
